Welcome To The Wonderful World Of D.J.ing.
Whether you are a novice or already working as a D.J., the D.J. Training Center has something to offer you. John Roberts’ D.J. Training Center is the nation’s first independent full service training facility for D.J.’s.
Let us qualify this statement from the start. There have been other facilities for teaching D.J.s to mix and others to teach the basics of D.J.ing, but mostly they were companies that required you to work for them.
The D.J. Training Center is designed to take you from start to finish, step by step through the ins and outs of the D.J. business. It is actually designed to teach you how to be a D.J., to own and operate your own D.J. Company and help you avoid the pitfalls of inexperience and trial and error learning through our 17+ years of experience.
The training center consists of three sound proof training rooms and a classroom, each equipped with a different sound system to give students an opportunity to familiarize themselves with a variety of modern standard equipment used in night clubs and mobile system.
The Course
The course is a 60-hour training period. Local students have various hourly schedules for six weeks. Out-of-state students receive intensified training for 10 days, six hours a day. Classes are scheduled in advance and enrollment is on a first come first served basis with no more then 8 students per class.
Classes for out-of-state students may be adjusted to meet with your needs provided no students have enrolled during a time period you might specifically request.
The Classes
The classes are equally divided between classroom instruction and hands on training and practice.
Here is a brief description of some of the topics and subjects taught at the D.J. Training Center. The History of Disco, job expectations, types of equipment and usage, announcing, record and care and research, big band, country, 40s through the 90s music familiarization, microphone skills, music programming, specialty music, request, pacing, developing sets, crowd control, organizing your records, specialty shows, dances, games, weddings, bar mitzvahs, seques, bpm, keys, mixing, dubbing, where to obtain records, tapes, c.d.’s, lighting, video, special effects, trouble shooting, contracts, agents, taxes, promotions, job markets, pricing, and much much more.
Students are encouraged to accompany the instructors on shows they may be doing while attending the training center for a first hand inside look at the D.J. business.
John Roberts personally instructs all of the students at the training center. All of the assisting instructors are hand picked by him based on their particular area of expertise, and all are experienced professionals currently working in the D.J. profession.
Equipment
Equipment utilized in the training center consist of two Technic SLB 10 turntables, six Technic 1200 MK 2 turntables, a variety of mixers including Clubman II, Numark 4700, 1900, 1559, 1800 and 1900, ATUS AM 300 and a Urie 1620. We use a variety of tape decks and amps.
Equipment may vary depending on availability, and of course we are always adding new equipment.
Hands On
Since the opening of the D.J. Training center there has been a rash of video training products introduced into the market. Although the training center does produce and employ various video training tapes, there is one aspect of training that these tapes can never overcome. That is the hands on opportunities each and every student gets while attending the training center. Good accurate mixing is all in the fingers. For it’s in the “touch”, the way a D.J. handles the record that leads to a smooth accurate mix. Video simply lacks feeling, which is essential to timing. Timing is everything when it comes to mixing.
Benefits To Students
Students attending the training center are eligible for the following benefits:
A certificate of training
A job placement program (mostly for local students, but available to out of state students on occasion), equipment rental
Practice facilities
A record buying service
Discounts on equipment and supplies
Refresher courses
• An information hotline and we will even refer privates shows to graduate students
Accommodations for out of state students: There is a hotel within walking distance to the training center and numerous hotels within ¼ to two miles distance.
Final Assistance
Student loans may be arranged for local students but due to the low cost and shirt period of enrollment our financial institutions are unable to help out of state students at this time. WE do however accept Master Card and VISA.
